SQL DATEPART(dd, getdate()) vs VB.NET...
WARNING: THIS POST IS REALLY NERDY.
While developing a calendar application, I ran into an issue that took hours to diagnose and nearly prompted me to wrap my car around a tree. The issue is this…
I was taking a date from SQL, using the DATEPART function to return an integer value for the day of the week, then comparing that to the result of the DayOfWeek function in VB.NET. Here’s...

Tony Spore suggested I contact you about email and firewalls. I know things are changing quickly, and I'm ready to pitch the email server and have all staff use their Droids and iPhones for email. What do you suggest?

How To Resolve Most Google Apps Issues
Since switching the majority of my clients over to Google Apps I have enjoyed the speed, reliability and accessibility of their free service. Unfortunately when things don’t go as expected, dealing with Google’s “customer service” is a less than comforting experience. I have found one thing you can do on your own to clear up most issues before attempting to get the boys up...

How To Speed Up iOS4 On Your iPhone 3G Or 3GS
If your iPhone 3G or 3GS has been running slow since the iOS4 update, this one modification has made a dramatic difference in how quickly my iPhone responds. This should tide you over until Apple figures out what the issue is.
1) Go to Settings > General
2) Click “Spotlight Search”
3) Uncheck everything
Finally, reboot your phone by holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons...
Hey Jones Supports Ventura's Bid For Google's... →
The application has been submitted to Google, which means that in the coming weeks and months, Google personnel will be carefully going over the submissions and considering which community to choose — which means this is our time to really shine! We have a chance to stand out as the tenacious little city we are, so when Google pulls up our app and, well, Googles us, they’ll see...

How To Start/Stop SQL Server Through The Command...
I recently ran into an issue with a client where I couldn’t login to their SQL Server. I was able to access the data files, but because SQL locks the data files while it’s running, I had to find a way to stop the service remotely. I also included the method for stopping and starting the services locally. Note: be sure to run the stop command on the sqlserveragent service first, since...

Once you’ve created the VPN connection in My Network Places, download and install the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools from Microsoft. Although it doesn’t mention XP compatibility, it will work. The next step is to create a batch file with the following command:

How To Expand (or Contract) a VMWare Fusion...
I use VMWare Fusion exclusively for my .NET programming environment ever since I got my first MacBook a couple years back. I tend to be not so generous when it comes to the disk space that I allocate to my guest OS, so I’ve had to perform the following process to expand my virtual disks quite a few times. The first step is simple enough, in the Settings for the virtual machine, click the...

Convert Quarter to Month
I’ve been having to do this a lot lately, and so rather than creating a case statement every time I set out to create an equation to handle the conversion. Since I never got past Intermediate Algebra, it took a lot longer than it probably should have, but I’m still fairly impressed with myself:
m = q + (q * 2) - 2
… and the chalkboard, or trinomial version (thanks Greg):
m = q...
